German Cockroaches
How to identify
German cockroaches are the most common type of cockroach found in homes, restaurants, commercial kitchens and grocery stores. They are about ½ inch long, light brown to tan, with two dark parallel stripes on their back.
They prefer dark, warm habitats with high humidity, and fit into tight spaces for harborage. They are most often found near food preparation areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Thirty to forty new roaches can result from a single female in 50 to 60 days, which explains how roach problems seem to appear overnight and multiply rapidly.
German Cockroaches can transmit diseases and infest our foodstores
Cockroaches have been associated with the transmission of pathogenic organisms, parasitic protozoans. They have most recently been linked to allergic reactions in children, due to their cast skins and fecal deposits.
German cockroaches reproduce prolifically and are difficult to eliminate without professional help. Most over-the-counter treatments kill only the roaches that are exposed. However, roaches normally prefer the safety of cracks and crevices and are not effected by such do-it-yourself treatments.
Unless more that 98% of a population is eliminated, it will rebound in only a few months.
How to limit the conditions that attract or support German Cockroaches
- Thoroughly clean food preparation and storage areas.
- Thoroughly clean bathrooms.
- Seal cracks and crevices along baseboards, in walls and around any wall-mounted equipment, kitchen and bath cabinets, shelving and fixtures.
- Reduce clutter such as old stored corrugated boxes, paper products, and the like near warm, moist areas where roaches can develop rapidly.
- Rinse empty beverage containers before storing for return to store or recycler and store away from your kitchen areas.
- Inspect incoming foods and food preparation and storage paper products before bringing them into your kitchen or storage areas.
- Seek professional assistance and consider an ongoing, preventive program. (Remember, most over-the-counter treatments kill only the roaches that are exposed; unless more than 98% of a population is eliminated, it will rebound in only a few months.)
Buffalo Exterminating is tough on German Cockroaches
The combination of cockroach harborage treatment, using non-repellent dusts, and precision-applied roach baits yields the most effective results, when undertaken along with eliminating the conditions that support cockroach activity (see above). Under normal situations it requires two to three treatments initially to eliminate a well-established breeding population.
Preventive Maintenance
Buffalo Exterminating's Preventive Maintenance programs help decrease the reestablishment of German cockroaches. Regular inspections, and the use of our exclusive silent defense insect trapping system, help detect cockroaches before they become a problem. Roach-proofing helps reduce harborage areas and is available through our pest exclusion program.
More information
German cockroaches develop rapidly under optimum conditions of 80°F and over 40% relative humidity.
