House Spiders
How to identify
The body is yellow brown to dirty white in color and ranges from 1/8 to ¼ inch in length. Egg sacs, each containing up to 250 spiderlings, resemble small cotton balls. Egg sacs can be found underneath furniture, along ceiling edges, around windows and near doors. Spiders construct webs to capture prey, usually small flying insects, and prefer to live in areas of higher humidity such as basements and crawl spaces. Spider webs are often found near windows because the daylight attracts small flying insects upon which spiders feed.
Spiders cause problems:
- House spiders can inflict a sometimes painful bite which causes skin irritation.
- Spider droppings adhere to walls, windows and siding and are difficult to remove.
- Spider webs are unsightly and require constant attention to remove.
How to limit conditions that attract or support house spiders:
- Remove wood piles near structures.
- Reduce clutter and debris inside structures.
- Have tight fitting screens, windows, doors and through wall vents.
- Sweep or vacuum webs and egg sacs regularly to remove.
Buffalo Exterminating is tough on spiders:
Regular preventive treatments around exterior portions of a structure are effective in controlling spiders when made in conjunction with taking steps to limit conditions which attract and support spider activity. Inside spiders can be managed by removal of webbing, using insect glue traps and careful treatment with spider control products. House spiders are a year round pest and require continued vigilance to manage their activity in and around a structure.
