Wasps
How to identify
Paper Wasps are about ¾ inch long, brownish with yellow markings and long legs. When paper wasps locate their nests too close to human activity, they become a nuisance.
During spring and early summer each year, paper wasps begin to build open-celled paper-like nests that resemble umbrellas. Nests are commonly found on the undersides of eaves, soffits, deck/porch rails, window & door frames, undersides of stairs/decks, porch ceilings, mail boxes, lights, yard play sets, pool edges, and behind shutters, etc.
Paper Wasps sting
Wasp nests can house hundreds of wasps. When disturbed, they sting readily and aggressively. Reaction to their painful stings may range from mild irritation to severe - and even fatal in sensitive individuals.
Over-the-counter treatments may kill any wasps contacted, but caution must be taken to avoid being attacked by agitated wasps. You can easily suffer multiple wasp stings. Some people have serious, even fatal reactions to wasp stings.
How to limit the conditions that attract or support Paper Wasps
- Keep trash collection areas clean.
- Store garbage in sealed bags.
- Seal holes in exterior surfaces especially along rooflines, loose fitted siding and storm windows.
- Seek professional assistance and consider an ongoing, preventive program.
How Buffalo Exterminating is tough on Paper Wasps
The best treatment for controlling paper wasps is to locate and eliminate their nests. Professional pest management assistance helps lessen the likelihood of being stung, and increases the probability that as many nests as possible are located. Proper materials and specialized application equipment allows as many adult wasps to be killed during initial treatment as possible. This is necessary to reduce the likelihood that new nests are built by worker wasps that are absent during treatment. Nests should be removed after treatment. Our preventive maintenance program helps prevent problems with paper wasps by treating outside three times per year once every 8 weeks from April through October.
We offer wasp-proofing services to help make your structure less accessible and attractive to wasps.
More information
Paper wasps, like yellow jackets, can be beneficial when they feed on other insects. Many aerosol wasp sprays damage vinyl siding.
