Western New York Fall Pest Prevention Tips

ehrlich exterminating technicianFall is one of the best seasons in Western New York for a lot of reasons--the weather, football, Oktoberfest--you name it. One thing about fall most homeowners don't enjoy is that pests are looking to escape the decreasing temperature outdoors. What's their common solution? Our homes. While you may be excited to have less maintenance to do on the outside of your home, there are a few tasks to take care of before enjoying the comfort of the indoors. To keep pests away once the weather gets cold, here are a few things to keep in mind:

Fall home maintenance tips

Storing firewood can be risky business for a homeowner, but who doesn't love a fire during fall and winter? There are a few best practices to keep your firewood pest-free.

Start by keeping wood piles at least 20-30 feet away from your home. Do not store your firewood on the ground, this makes it much easier to access for pests. Lastly, make sure to purchase a cover for the pile of wood to protect it from pests and rain. Uncovered, wet wood near your home is asking for a lot of pest problems!

Hanging up Halloween decorations is something many families look forward to. Whether it's pumpkins, fake spiderwebs, scarecrows or just a wreath, fall decorations are abundant in Buffalo! However, we typically store decorations in the basement or garage throughout the year, which means they should be dusted and cleaned before being hung up.

Pumpkins and gourds are known to attract pests (like flies and rodents in search of food). Be aware of your decorations and make sure they aren't inviting unwanted visitors.

The changing leaves of autumn are a beautiful sight, but not when there's a buildup of them in your gutters. Clogged gutters do more than cause potential damage to the home, they are a welcoming breeding ground for pests such as mosquitoes and other flying insects. When fall comes around, be sure to clean out your gutters regularly.

Common fall pests to prevent

You can't blame them for not wanting to be out in the cold, but you can blame them for choosing your home. Rats and mice are notorious fall pests that seek a warm place for winter--unfortunately, often times it is your home.

Rodents are usually found in walls, attics, pantries and anywhere there are open food containers. If you spot gnaw marks or rodent droppings, call a professional right away. The best way to keep rodents away is to keep them out--thoroughly inspect your home for possible holes and gaps they may enter from.

A warm day in fall can bring flies out of hiding. You may think your fruit is safe on the counter, or that it's still cool enough to open your window, but then later there are flies buzzing around your kitchen. Flies can be prevented the same way rodents can--keep them out! Seal up even the smallest of cracks or gaps in your window and door frames.

Bees & Wasps

It's hard to feed a colony of wasps or bees when cold weather hits! Unfortunately for homeowners, colonies of stinging insects are definitely not paying rent and must be taken care of. With such a struggle to find food for the colony and support the nest, stinging insects can become more aggressive than usual and should be avoided unless by a pest control professional.

Check your garage, shed and gutters for nests this season and get it taken care of if you find one!

Before hibernating, ants consume a lot of food in the fall. With that being said, there's a lot of pressure on ant colonies to beef up before their long sleep. When ants are in need of warmth and food, they will attempt to make their way indoors wherever possible. Keep your kitchen clean of crumbs and unsealed food! Seal off any possible entryways to avoid ants shacking up in your home. When you find one ant, there is likely a whole colony nearby. Make sure to call a professional to prevent a colony of ants from hibernating on your property.
