BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Despite the rain, volunteers worked to beautify the queen city's west side. It's all part of Global Youth Services Day.

Close to one hundred volunteers from all over Buffalo gathered in this west side neighborhood Sunday. They hit the streets with brooms, rakes, shovels and garbage bags to clean up!
Whitney Yax said, "We're doing these cleanups to show we care about our neighborhood and we want to build power and see it become even better than it is."

Sunday's cleanup took place along Massachusetts Avenue. Volunteers from Daemen College, PUSH, the Boys and Girls Club, and even local businesses worked hard in the rain trying to make a difference.

Sharron Kuschel said, "All of us from Buffalo Exterminators are very excited. We are a community company and we love helping the community."

And all around the world efforts like this are taking place this weekend to mark Global Youth Services Day. Residents say here the cleanup is definitely needed.

Bob Murphy said, "For various reasons it's been neglected. A lot of people have moved out, people are now moving back in, it's time for us to bring it back."

This is the same neighborhood where the Extreme Makeover home was built months ago. Residents say even though the show's crew is long gone, they left behind an enthusiasm to make this neighborhood a better place to live.

Jennifer Mecozzi said, "We're actually really surprised that the momentum is still there so we're just trying to keep it going. Look at these people here in the rain. It's a good thing!"

A good thing that hopefully continues even after the volunteers go home.
